Montgomery Farm Women's Coop
Montgomery Farm Woman's Cooperative Market | 7155 Wisconsin Avenue | Bethesda MD 20814Enjoy a taste of the past at the oldest market in the area! Authentic indoor country market in the heart of Bethesda! The market s beginning was in the depression days of the thirties. A group of farm women, plagued by declining prices, drought, threat of foreclosure, and equipment and repair necessities launched a market to sell farm produce to residents of the District of Columbia and its growing suburbs. These women were members of the Home Demonstration Clubs, sponsored by the Extension Service of the University of Maryland. The market was initiated with the cooperation of Montgomery County and the USDA. The project, despite many difficulties, was a success. For more than half a century, the low-lying white clapboard building, shaded by two large sycamore trees on busy Wisconsin Avenue in the heart of Bethesda, has housed the Montgomery Farm Women s Cooperative Market. Heralded as the only farm woman s cooperative of its kind in the world, the market soon drew national and international attention. Several national periodicals carried stories on the Farm Women s Market. The Women s Home Companion of October, 1937, said, In Bethesda, Maryland, in the fringe of Washington, stands an institution as distinctively American as the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, but it is not included in the list of sights worth seeing in the Capital. Yet thousands of Washingtonians visit it every week and hold it in warm regard. The uniqueness of the market is still newsworthy and articles are published from time to time in gourmet magazines, newspapers and other periodicals all over the US and Europe.
